Building the Demographers of Tomorrow

The future of population science depends on cultivating a new generation of scholars who are fluent in experimental methods, computational tools, and interdisciplinary theory. The Institute of Experimental Demography is deeply committed to education and training, offering a suite of innovative programs designed to mentor and inspire early-career researchers. Our educational philosophy moves beyond traditional demographic coursework to create a immersive, hands-on, and collaborative learning environment. Trainees are not passive students but active junior colleagues, integrated into research teams from day one and encouraged to develop their own independent projects. We aim to produce demographers who are not only technically proficient but also ethically aware, policy-engaged, and capable of communicating complex science to diverse audiences.

Structured Training Programs

The flagship offering is our Doctoral Program in Experimental Demography. This unique PhD track, often offered in partnership with university departments of sociology, economics, or public health, provides a rigorous core curriculum covering advanced demographic methods, causal inference, statistical programming, and the ethical foundations of research. Students then choose specialized modules in areas like biodemography, digital demography, or migration studies. A distinctive feature is the apprenticeship model: each doctoral student is matched with two primary mentors from different disciplines within the institute, ensuring interdisciplinary guidance. Students are required to complete a minor in a complementary field (e.g., computer science, epidemiology) and to engage in a policy internship with a government or NGO partner.

For postdoctoral scholars, we offer competitive Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowships. These two- to three-year positions provide recent PhDs from demography or adjacent fields the resources, mentorship, and freedom to pursue ambitious research agendas. Fellows receive a generous stipend, dedicated research funding, access to our computing infrastructure and data resources, and opportunities to organize workshops. The fellowship cohort forms a vibrant intellectual community, with regular work-in-progress seminars and writing retreats. Many of our postdoctoral fellows have gone on to secure tenure-track positions at leading universities or influential roles in international organizations.

We also run an annual International Summer Institute in Advanced Demographic Methods. This intensive two-week program brings together graduate students and early-career professionals from around the world for training in cutting-edge topics, such as 'Causal Analysis with Panel Data,' 'Machine Learning for Social Science,' or 'Ethics of Big Data Research.' Taught by institute faculty and renowned external experts, the summer institute fosters a global network of methodologically savvy demographers.

  • Undergraduate Research Scholars Program: A competitive summer internship for outstanding undergraduates, offering hands-on research experience and mentorship.
  • Methods Workshop Series: Open, monthly workshops on specific software (R, Python, Stata), techniques (sequence analysis, spatial demography), or data sources.
  • Professional Development Seminars: Sessions on grant writing, peer review, science communication, and academic job market strategies.
  • Visiting Scholar Program: Hosts established researchers for short-term collaborative visits, enriching the intellectual environment for trainees.

A Culture of Mentorship and Open Science

Beyond formal programs, we foster a culture of collective growth. Senior researchers dedicate significant time to mentorship, with structured feedback sessions and career planning. We emphasize open and reproducible science; trainees are trained in version control (Git), dynamic document creation (R Markdown, Jupyter), and data management plans. All institute research code and, where ethically possible, data are made publicly available. We encourage trainees to publish in open-access journals and to disseminate findings through blogs, podcasts, and policy briefs. This holistic approach to training ensures that our graduates are not only exceptional researchers but also responsible, engaged, and communicative scientists. By investing in people, the Institute of Experimental Demography amplifies its impact, seeding the global academic and policy landscape with leaders who will continue to advance the frontiers of population science for decades to come. Our ultimate educational product is a cohort of thinkers equipped to tackle the demographic challenges of an uncertain future with skill, creativity, and integrity.
